The Humble Beginnings Of Jigsaw Puzzles

Introduction

The jigsaw puzzle was not always the popular game it is today. In fact, its humble beginnings can be traced back to the 1760s when mapmakers would sell hand-cut puzzle pieces to families as a way to learn about geography. It wasn't until 1820, when Englishman John Spilsbury glued a map onto a piece of wood and cut along the country's borders, that the jigsaw puzzle as we know it was born.

Fascination With Puzzles

When I was a child, my mother would often buy me jigsaw puzzles as a way to keep me occupied. I remember spending hours at the kitchen table, piecing together images of animals, landscapes and cartoon characters. Little did I know that these simple puzzles would one day become a passion of mine.

Jigsaw puzzles have been around for centuries, with the earliest known example dating back to 1760. The puzzle is thought to have been created by mapmaker John Spilsbury, who glued a map of the world onto a piece of wood and then cut it into small pieces.

Today, jigsaw puzzles are more popular than ever, with people of all ages enjoying the challenge and satisfaction that comes from completing one. For me, there's nothing quite like sitting down with a new puzzle and losing myself in the process of putting it all together.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the humble jigsaw puzzle has come a long way since its inception over 200 years ago. Today, it is a beloved pastime for people of all ages, and its popularity shows no signs of waning. So next time you're feeling stuck, consider giving one of these puzzles a try - you might be surprised at how satisfying it is to put all the pieces together.
